Gallery 322 is pleased to present Moments in Time, a solo exhibition of new works by Jan Kaufman, a rising figure in the Frederick fine-art scene. The works in this exhibition evoke that certain moment in any narrative that captures both everything that has occurred and everything that has yet to occur, a “moment in time” that illustrates and embodies the story as a whole.

Time never stands still, but by using the medium of the two-dimensional plane, Jan Kaufman seems to temporarily hold back the hands of time and allow us to digest what would otherwise be a fleeting moment. And so we see chaise lounges looking out to sea while awaiting the arrival of their future occupants. We see the model stretching, once her long pose for an artist is finally over and she can move again. We see a desert sun, just before it drops behind the distant mountains.

Born and raised in New Mexico, Kaufman is known in particular for her bold brush strokes, vivid colors and richly textured surfaces. Her dramatic landscapes, still lifes and figure paintings reflect her wish to draw the viewer into each canvas and to stay awhile. This new exhibition includes works from scenes in Maryland and New Mexico, and also the Caribbean and France.
